Apiece Apart Woman

We got lost in conversation with Agnes. “I guess I can talk,” she says. Her words posses the same effortless blend of form and function as her designs, wisdom packaged so practically for real life, you want to write it down on a scrap of paper and slip it into the pocket of a timeless leather tote for safekeeping…

Hall, as big Jordan, only goes through a handful of outfit changes before she turns little, and then only a couple more when she returns to her regular self, but they also help tell the story of her transformation. Her first look is a red-and-blue, pinstripe Virgil Abloh shirt (Hollowell made it a point to incorporate a number of Black designers, including Abloh, Cushnie, Romeo Hunte, Brother Vellies, and Agnes Baddoo), which she pairs with red pants. "I had a discussion with Regina early on, and we were talking about the color red and how a lot of people are scared of it, but a lot of people love it, too," she says. "It means power, and most men, they wear these power red ties. Well, she's a powerful woman so let's go for this powerful red color."

What’s the handbag that would give you life—if only you could find it? Agnes Baddoo answered that question for herself, and it became a business.

Formerly a fashion stylist for Elle magazine, Baddoo cut her teeth on the international fashion circuit of New York, London and Paris in the ’90s. When The Glow Up caught up with the designer over the phone from her headquarters in Los Angeles, she was celebrating the fifth anniversary of her eponymous unisex line of handmade leather bags, now sold by some of the most exclusive retailers in the world.

DOEN: The Radiant Agnes Baddoo and her Magic Leather Goods

The Radiant Agnes Baddoo and her Magic Leather Goods Photography by Nicki Sebastian

There are certain people with whom connection is immediate, a certain mutual admiration passing between you from the second you meet. That is exactly what happened when I met Agnes a few years ago through a mutual friend. Agnes is undoubtedly a force. There is a kindness deep in her eyes, and a softness in her heart that is evident in the raw honesty and way she discloses about her life - directly to the important stuff! She is known in the Los Angeles community not only for her radiant personality but also for her cult favorite bags. The simple designs, high quality material and tried and true shapes of her locally and traditionally made leather goods have captured the hearts and attention of many. She started small at the Echo Park Craft Fair, with her first season selling out within hours. I personally have a few of her pieces (The Sac 2Belt Sac and the Canvas Foldover clutch - coming back to her website soon!), which I constantly get compliments on, and they are only getting better with time and love and wear.

Echo Park Craft Fair: Artist Interview

For the past 20 years, Agnes Badoo has been a Los Angeles-based stylist, author of five travel guides, creator of numerology inspired sprays known as Everyw’air and designer of the much coveted leather totes. We spoke to her about her work and inspirations.

What is your background and how have your past experiences fed into your art?
My background is in fine art (painting/printmaking), fashion editorial, costume design/styling with a few choice retail forays sprinkled for good measyre. My appreciation of materials, quality craftsmanship, form+function, plus an understanding of vendor/consumer engagement inspire me to create timeless, well made, good looking items that will last and be appreciated for a lifetime and beyond.

Do you feel that your environment feeds into work and if so, what makes your work distinctively Californian?
Overall, I think my work is universal but the weather, light, landscape of California definitely keeps me inspired + motivated. Also, I find in California, an emphasis on lifestyle and well-being that is compatible with my preference for timeless, thoughtfully designed, practical forever items.

What are your top 3 studio essentials?
Natural light, a (minimally cluttered) work table, music. (Proximity to the kitchen doesn’t hurt!)
